2021 Guggenheim Fellowships Announced
The Board of Trustees of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation approved the awarding for Guggenheim Fellowships to a diverse group of 184 artists, writers, scholars, and scientists. Huggins, Choreographer, New York City José Ome Navarrete Mazatl, Choreographer, Oakland, California Helen Simoneau, Choreographer, Brooklyn, New York Christopher Williams, Choreographer, New York City The 15th Annual Dance Parade has been scheduled to take place online, Saturday, May 22, starting at 1 PM under the theme, “Dance Brings Us Together”. Heading the event will be Grand Marshals LISA LISA; the Latina Pop Music Legend, Dance Theatre of Harlem founding member and current Artistic Director VIRGINIA JOHNSON; and H.T. CHEN & DIAN DONG, founding directors of Chen Dance Center. A $20 donation is suggested, and viewing is free for artists and low income viewers. Visit www.danceparade.org. Nine artists selected for JACK Artist Residencies Brooklyn performance and civic space JACK announces the nine artists selected for residencies at JACK, running March through August 2021. Chosen from an open call that drew 169 submissions, the artists include theater-makers Carolina Đỗ, Kedian Keohan, Drew Drake and Jadele McPherson, designers Itohan Edoloyi and Tuçe Yasak, composers Jaime Lozano and Sugar Vendil, and dance artist Nora Alami. These residencies are intended to give artists an opportunity to deepen their craft, explore, experiment, and develop new work. Each artist will receive two weeks in the space with full access to JACK's technical equipment, as well as a $500 stipend. Read more here National Portrait Gallery Announces Rhea L. Combs as Its New Director of Curatorial Affairs4/8/2021 FROM THE FOLKS AT THE SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY: Rhea L. Combs is named as its new director of curatorial affairs, effective May 10. Combs comes to the Portrait Gallery from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, where she has served as curator of film and photography and head of the museum’s Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts. At the Portrait Gallery, Combs will work with the museum’s Curatorial, History, Conservation and Audience Engagement departments to draw connections between portraiture, biography and identity. Find out more here The Center for the Ballet and the Arts at NYU and National Sawdust today announced the 40 composers and choreographers named as Toulmin Creators who will collaborate on new work for the virtual medium and participate in a slate of digital performances and programs, free and open to the public. The Toulmin Creators join five Toulmin Fellows, announced in the fall. The addition of the Toulmin Creators is the next phase in a year-long partnership between the Center for Ballet and the Arts and National Sawdust, designed to support female, trans, and non-binary artists. Creators receive project development support, resources to adapt their work to the digital space, and a generative environment in which to develop new work and collaborate across artistic disciplines. The partnership is made possible by a $300,000 gift from the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. Find out more here |
